Vice President attends opening ceremony of COP27

Vice President Faisal Naseem has attended the opening ceremony of the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. He was accompanied by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna. He is scheduled to deliver the national statement at the Climate Implementation Summit.

COP27 is a significant occasion for the Maldives and a chance to address the country's aims for sustainable development on a global level. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been a vocal advocate regarding the fiscal strain and climate vulnerabilities faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) during preceding global forums. The Maldives had previously announced an ambitious plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

The Government of Egypt is hosting COP27, bringing together parties to accelerate global climate action through emissions reduction, scaled-up adaptation efforts, and enhanced flows of appropriate finance. Many world leaders are participating in the summit, along with thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses, and advocates.
