AGO discusses JSC reform with civil society

Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has held meetings with civil society organisations to discuss reforming the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

AGO held meetings with Hope for Women, Maldives Youth, Junior Chamber International, Abba Maldives, Association for Democracy in the Maldives, and Maldives Poetry Society. Interested civil society organisations were invited to register before October 11.

Reviewing and revising the composition of the JSC and amending Article 157 of the Constitution is one of the key pledges made by the government to reform the judiciary. AGO said the bill will include amendments to Article 157 of the constitution, in accordance with relevant international norms and principles to ensure that the JSC is free from biased political influence. The bill will be introduced in the ongoing third session of the Parliament.

JSC is composed of 10 members including the Speaker of Parliament, a representative judge from the Supreme Court, a representative judge from the High Court, a representative judge from lower courts, representatives from the president, the parliament, and the public, as well as the President of Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Attorney General (AG).
