MTCC to upgrade Neykurendhoo harbour, protect coast in Innamaadhoo

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has signed agreements to upgrade the harbour in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and build coastal protection structures in Innamaadhoo, Raa Atoll.

Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTCC Shahid Hussain Moosa signed the agreement with the Director General of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Fathimath Shaana Farooq at a special ceremony with Parliamentarians Mohamed Raee and Hassan Ahmed in attendance.

Under the Neykurendhoo Harbour Development Project, MTCC will be constructing a 212m barrier and 166m revetment, as well as constructing an outer barrier and a ramp. It will also be installing harbour lights and pavements after constructing the harbour. The cost of the project is USD3 million. Neykurendhoo has a population of 1,400 residents and is in need of a modern harbour due to the increased boat traffic and the island being connected to the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) high-speed ferry service.

Under the Innamaadhoo Coastal Protection Project, MTCC will be constructing a 360m groyne on the northern side of the island within seven months at a cost of USD1 million. The island has a popular of 900 residents and is notable for its boat-building and carpentry. The island is experiencing erosion on the northern side, which is impacting its economic prospects.
