The Government of the Maldives has expressed appreciation to the United Nations (UN) for assisting in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Foreign Secretary of the Maldives Ahmed Latheef made the statement during a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana to discuss the areas of cooperation. The executive secretary is undertaking a visit to the Maldives from October 29-31.
During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Latheef welcomed Executive Secretary Alisjahbana to the Maldives and noted that the visit would tremendously help efforts to attain the SDGs. He expressed his appreciation to the executive secretary for co-organising an event on SDGs and the Role of the Parliament with the Government of Maldives, the UN Resident Coordinator for the Maldives, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU). The event aims to offer parliamentarians in the Maldives an overview of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs and the challenges in the Asia-Pacific region and the Maldives, and the role of the Parliament in advancing the SDGs.
ESCAP is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in Asia and the Pacific. The ESCAP Secretariat supports inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development in the region by generating action-oriented knowledge, and by providing technical assistance and capacity-building services in support of national development objectives, regional agreements, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for SDGs. ESCAP also provides support to partners at the national level.
