Agriculture laboratory to be built in Fuvahmulah

Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has decided to build a national-level laboratory for agriculture in Fuvahmulah City.

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan and senior ministry officials have discussed the project with the Fuvahmulah City Council. They discussed the land plot to build the National Agriculture Laboratory.

Speaking to PSM News, Director General of the Fisheries Ministry Ismail Rasheed said the laboratory will conduct five types of research, evaluate the common tree diseases, and taking tissue samples from trees, and establish cell cultures. He said the Maldives currently has no such multi-discipline agriculture laboratory and that the building will contain smaller labs to do specialised research.

The ministry stated the Government of India is providing the resources for the construction project while Japan will be assisting under the Sustainable Economic Empowerment and Development for SMEs’ (SEEDS) project. It stated that the fieldwork will begin as soon as the land plot is allocated.
