Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated the Maldives will advocate for increased funding to mitigate environmental damage at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to be held in Egypt on November 6-18.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shauna said small island states will strongly advocate for providing financial assistance to mitigate the environmental damage being incurred due to climate change and the Maldives will also advocate for climate adaptation. She said requesting financial assistance for climate adaptation will be the top priority of the Maldives and will discuss formulating a plan to increase funding twofold.
Furthermore, Minister Shauna said that global temperatures could increase by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030 and that the Maldives needs a solution that involves the international community to mitigate the environmental damage it has to sustain. She said there needs to be a systemic solution to his issue, which has not yet been implemented.
The ministry has also prepared to address the concerns of the Maldivian youth on climate change at COP27. A multi-stakeholder consultation with young people on climate change was held on October 12 along with United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and other United Nations (UN) agencies.
