Former Prosecutor General (PG) Ahmed Muizzu has stated that the government has prioritised national interest in its maritime boundary dispute with Mauritius.
Former PG Muizzu made the statement in response to misunderstandings regarding the decision of the Maldives to vote in favour of the United Kingdom (UK) handing over control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
In a tweet, Attorney General’s Office (AGO) stated that the Maldives has not reversed its stand on challenging the maritime boundary dispute with Mauritius regarding the overlapping territory near the Chagos Islands, which is located south of the Maldives. It clarified that the maritime boundary dispute and the vote to hand over control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius are separate issues. Replying to the tweet, Muizzu said the government has been prioritising national interest in challenging Mauritius in the maritime boundary dispute.
The Maldives has also informed Mauritius that it would not give any leeway in the maritime boundary dispute, even if the Maldives side with Mauritius for the decolonisation of the Chagos Islands.
