President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated Rishi Sunak, the newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK).
In a tweet, President Solih congratulated Rishi Sunak as he becomes the leader of the ruling Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK. The president wished him success in delivering his vision for the UK and said he looks forward to working together on global issues of mutual concern as well as enhancing Maldives-UK relations.
British politician Rishi Sunak was elected Conservative leader and will become the next prime minister after rival Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow parliamentarians. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson had pulled out of the race.
The Tories retain a majority in Parliament, meaning that as their leader, Sunak will be named Prime Minister by King Charles III, after economic turmoil forced Lizz Truss to resign after serving just 44 days in office.
