State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has taken over the repair and maintenance of streetlights in 12 more islands as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
STELCO signed agreements with the councils of islands in Kaafu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll. As such, the company has agreed to repair and maintain a total of 29 streetlights in Gaafaru, Dhidhdhoo, Thulusdhoo, Himmafushi, Gulhi, Maafushi, and Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll as well as Fulidhoo, Thinadhoo, Felidhoo, Keyodhoo, and Rakeedhoo in Vaavu Atoll.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director of STELCO Ahmed Shareef said island councils have informed STELCO on the importance of maintaining streetlights during meetings held with respective councils. He said the company has conducted an audit on the maintenance and repair of the streetlights and is working to procure the necessary equipment. He added that the initiative will reduce the financial burden on the local councils.
