Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated that the Interpol database is a great help in reducing crime in the Maldives at a time when the number of tourists visiting the country is increasing. He made the remarks at the 90th General Assembly of Interpol held in New Delhi, India.
Speaking at the assembly, Commissioner Hameed said the Maldives can now access Interpol databases through the police information management system. He said the biggest achievement was the integration of the police information management system with Interpol's criminal information system called Interpol Find in 2021. He also stressed the importance of increasing the involvement of law enforcement agencies in Interpol in the future. He assured the Maldives will continue to provide full cooperation to Interpol in the future.
Interpol is an international organisation that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime control. Interpol provides investigative support, expertise, and training to law enforcement worldwide, focusing on three major areas of transnational crime: terrorism, cybercrime, and organised crime. The agency also facilitates cooperation among national law enforcement institutions through criminal databases and communications networks. The information provided by Interpol is a major force in identifying those involved in crimes and those in custody and solving such cases. In particular, there is a lot of information about terrorism and the identification of those involved in the changing criminal environment and those who commit such crimes.
In 2019, Interpol data was also used in the border management and customs operations of the Maldives. By 2020, all police investigations were integrated into Interpol's secure system.
