Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi has attended the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting on the Final Review of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The high-level meeting held for the member states of the Economic, and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) began on October 19. The meeting was co-chaired by Minister Aishath. The meeting is held to discuss the results and findings of the 2021 Voluntary Survey of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESPA) member states over the past century to build a disability-inclusive society, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Furthermore, the meeting will discuss how member countries will plan their activities for the next century. It will also discuss how to shape legislation at the national level to achieve what is in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and increase the participation of people with disabilities in disability-focused initiatives with new insights. Discussions will also be held on identifying new issues faced by persons with disabilities, identifying opportunities for such entities, and monitoring efforts to build a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities.

Ministers, government officials, persons with disabilities, civil society, and private sector allies from across Asia and the Pacific gather from 19 to 21 October in Jakarta to mark the birth of a new era for 700 million persons with disabilities and proclaim a fourth Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities.
