EPA issues fine over Maradhoo-Feydhoo harbour project

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a USD7,800 fine over how the habour development project in Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Addu City, was conducted.

EPA stated the harbour development project was conducted in violation of a report on the environment published on September 10, 2019, adding that the contractor was requested to conduct their work within the report’s guidelines three times. The agency stated the contractor was also warned that a USD7,800 fine would be levied after the third warning.

EPA issued the fine on October 17, to be paid within 30 days. The agency has instructed the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to conduct an environmental impact assessment (EIA) on the island through a consultant and submit the report within two months. It also requested the submission of an environmental audit report and a written statement guaranteeing that a new EIA monitoring plan would be submitted.

The Maradhoo-Feydhoo Harbour project was carried out by Heavy Force Private Limited. The project scope included the maintenance dredging of the harbour and harbour channel, the construction of a 243m breakwater and a 260m quay wall. It also included the construction of pavements and light installation along the harbour area. The harbour was inaugurated earlier this year.
