Gov't yet to receive USD64 million from tourism sector

The Ministry of Finance has revealed the state has not received about USD64 million in Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST), Green Tax, and penalties from the tourism sector.

Parliamentarian Ibrahim Rasheed sent a question to the Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer seeking details of taxes outstanding since the government started collecting GST, TGST, and Green Tax. The ministry disclosed the information in a written reply to the question by the parliamentarian seeking details of the outstanding amount of tax.

In the written reply to the question, Minister Ameer said that more than USD40.8 million was outstanding as of August 31 as TGST, while the penalty amounted to over USD15 million. The minister revealed the amount of TGST outstanding with the penalty is more than USD56 million.

Furthermore, Minister Ameer said more than USD5.4 million is outstanding as of August 31 as Green Tax, while the penalty amounts to over USD2.7 million which collectively amounts to USD8.2 million.

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has disclosed information about taxpayers owing large amounts to the state as tax.
