Media Code of Ethics revised after 11 years

Maldives Media Council (MMC) has signed the revised code of ethics for media. The new revisions to the code come after 11 years.

The signing was held at Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu, the national radio station. More than 60 online, print and broadcasting media outlets participated in the event.

President of MMC Mohamed Shafau Hassan said the newly formulated code of ethics will increase the responsibility of journalists. He said that information should be provided accurately and in a timely manner. He also urged the other media outlets who have not yet signed the code to submit the standards to MMC as soon as possible.

MMC said that the media must abide by the code of conduct and be familiar with it. It is a standard to which all parties involved in the dissemination of news and information must agree to comply. The new code of ethics states to respect Islam and the constitution and laws of the Maldives, respect the right of the public to know the truth, respect human rights and maintain social ethics, avoid benefits and influences that may adversely affect journalism, and hold to the rules of journalism.
