Bad weather expected across Maldives in next four days

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has stated that the weather is expected to be bad for the next four days.

The western monsoon has intensified in the Maldivian region and winds will be strong and seas will be rough, especially in the north and central parts of the country, According to the weather service. In addition, the MET Office has been issuing special weather alerts more frequently to aware the public of the changes.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is expected to be torrential rains and thunderstorms in some parts of the country. West and northwest winds will be between 15-25mph in the central and northern atolls while southwest and west winds will be between 13-23mph in the southern atolls. Strong winds of up to 45mph are expected in the area. The weather service said the seas will be generally strong and wave heights will be between 4-7ft.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) also urged seafarers to exercise caution as the western monsoon is expected to intensify over the next four days, especially in the north and central parts of the country. In addition, MNDF advised boat owners, captains and crew members, and their families and friends to ensure that they are travelling in a safe and secure vessel. Seafarers are also advised to check the weather and choose a safe route before starting the journey and that if anything happens while traveling to contact the MNDF Coast Guard toll-free number 191 immediately.
