Maldives to develop new concept prison complex

Ministry of Home Affairs has contracted Unique Choice Private Limited for the development of the first phase of the new concept industrial prison complex to be developed in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

The agreement of the venture was signed by Permanent Secretary of Home Ministry Abdul Rahman Salaah Rasheed and Managing Director of Unique Choice Company Riyaz Ali. The new concept industrial prison complex in Neykurendhoo will be developed with rehabilitation treatment and facilities to bring inmates back to society.

Under the agreement, a 614m long, 6.096m high wall will be constructed on the north side of the prison and a wall 462m long and 6.096m high will be constructed on the east side. The project is being carried out at a cost of over USD989,000 and must be completed within 250 days. Initially, the home ministry revealed the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ministry has now given compensation for the coconut palms and trees in the area allocated for the prison to be built.

The construction of a prison in Neykurendhoo is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as an important part of the strategic action plan in the area of correction and rehabilitation. It will be developed as an open prison system where inmates will be taught life skills and industrial work. The prison complex can accommodate 300 inmates.
