Attorney General's Office (AGO) has invited civil society organisations to participate in the consultation on reforming the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Reviewing and revising the composition of the JSC and amending Article 157 of the constitution is one of the key pledges made by the government to reform the judiciary. AGO said the bill will include amendments to Article 157 of the constitution, in accordance with relevant international norms and principles to ensure that the JSC is free from biased political influence. Interested civil society organisations have been invited to register before October 11 although discussions have begun the process to reform the composition of the JSC. As part of the ongoing discussions to reform the composition, JSC first met with the Supreme Court. The bill will be introduced in the ongoing third session of the Parliament.
JSC is composed of 10 members including the Speaker of Parliament, a representative judge from the Supreme Court, a representative judge from the High Court, a representative judge from lower courts, representatives from the president, the parliament, and the public, as well as the President of Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Attorney General (AG).
