MWSC completes Hangnaameedhoo water supply system project

Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has completed the development of the water supply system in Hangnaameedhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure contracted MWSC to develop the water supply system in 2019. However, the company commenced the project in 2021 after delays in procuring the equipment and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MWSC stated teams from the planning ministry and State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), as well as its own team, have travelled to Hangnaameedhoo and tested the water supply system. The company added that it has trained employees to operate and maintain the water supply and sewerage system on the island.

As part of the project, MWSC built a 6km water supply network, a building with two reverse osmosis (RO) plants, and three water storage containers. In addition, the households have been connected to the network and the water metres have been installed. The company has also brought in the purification system and the generator sets to power the system. The cost of the project is USD1.4 million.

Hangnaameedhoo Island Council stated the water supply system will solve the challenges faced by residents due to the damaged water table and pave the way for the development of the local guesthouse businesses.
