Peace and civility are key to a safe community: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated that peace and civility are the keys to a safe community. He made the statement in his message on the International Day of Non-Violence.

In his message, Minister Imran conveyed greetings to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the citizens on the special occasion and said every person needs to contribute to the establishment of a safe and peaceful community. He also said the government, its institutions, and citizens need to contribute to the reduction of violence, advising that violence is not the solution to disagreements or conflicts between countries, communities, or individuals.

Additionally, Minister Imran said the Maldives can contribute to the establishment of a non-violent world and that every Maldivian can contribute to the establishment of non-violent communities. Ministry of Home Affairs has been giving out special badges to senior state officials and institutions to mark the occasion.

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who is the leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. The day is an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness, according to the United Nations General Assembly resolution which established the commemoration. The resolution reaffirms the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence and the desire to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.
