NDMA urges public to take precautions over heavy rain

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures to prevent their goods and household from being damaged by rain.

Due to the worsening weather, NDMA advised the public to take preventative measures such as blocking their houses from flooding and transferring their property to elevated and safe areas in case water leaks into their houses. The authority also recommended tying down any property that could be affected by strong winds and switching off electronics when not in use. Vessels were also advised to obtain the latest weather information and take the necessary safety precautions prior to travel.

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has been issuing yellow and white alerts for various parts of the country in the last few days over heavy rain and thunderstorms. The Met Office also predicted strong winds and rough seas in the northern and central atolls during the next five days, due to a strong southwest monsoon over the Maldives.
