Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has stated that 14 important regulations are being formulated for the development of the maritime sector.
In a press statement on World Maritime Day, the transport ministry noted the efforts being made to develop the Maldives maritime sector on the instructions of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. They include training programmes for captains, officers, and engineers to be conducted for the next three years and further develop the shipping line under the Maldives State Shipping (MSS). The ministry noted that the shipping line has allowed businesses to export and import more goods to the Maldives as well as open more job opportunities.
Furthermore, the transport ministry highlighted the strategic action plan implemented in 2022 to develop the maritime sector and the work to formulate 14 new crucial regulations. The ministry stated the regulations will give more rights to employees in the maritime sector and provide guidelines on their training.
The theme for World Maritime Day 2022 is New Technologies for Greener Shipping. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) stated it reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future while leaving no one behind. The organisation stated the theme provides an opportunity to focus on the importance of a sustainable maritime sector and the need to build back better and greener in a post-pandemic world.
