Maakurathu harbour development project progressing at fast pace

Maakurathu Island Council has stated the harbour development project on the island is progressing at a fast pace.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Maakurathu Island Council Mohamed Rameez said the efforts to develop the harbour are progressing. He said the newly improved harbour will provide a solution to the spatial constraints faced by residents. He said work is currently underway with the help of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to expand the harbour and make further changes.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) said the first shipment of concrete blocks for the harbour has now been delivered to the project site in Maakurathu. In addition, the majority of the dredging work of the new harbour basin has already been completed.

The harbour development project in Maakurathu was contracted to MTCC in January this year. The project involves repairing and expanding the existing harbour, which was constructed in 2009 but had not been fully completed. The scope of the harbour development project in Maakurathu involves 45,000cbm of harbour dredging and construction of a 129m quay wall, 140m breakwater, 85m revetment, and 28m groynes. The project also involves the construction of 641sqm of pavement and the installation of 26 mooring rings, five mooring buoys and nine harbour lights. The total value of the project is USD1.72 million.
