Madaveli boat breaks single day record for highest catch

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced a fishing boat from Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, for breaking the record for the highest catch sold in a single day using sustainable pole and line fishing.

MIFCO stated TS Line broke the record by selling 57.152 metric tonnes in a single day. In addition, the fishing boat sold 302 metric tonnes of tuna at the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex from August to September 29, earning USD328,000.

TS Line is a veteran vessel in the fishing industry that sold the most catch for MIFCO last year, which was 1,095.8 metric tonnes. The fishing boat has now broken the single-day record previously held by Rasmagu from Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, in 2006 after selling 53 metric tonnes.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ismail Fauzee said TS Line was fishing 30 miles outside of Thinadhoo, adding that MIFCO has been speeding up the fish processing work in order to reduce the waiting time, as boats are recording huge amounts of catch. As such, he said the catch will be processed on Fridays as well. He also noted that fishing boats are catching larger fish, which takes more time to freeze. He, however, said the company has no plans to control the amount of fish being processed.
