The government has officially marked the completion of phase one of the Integrated National Public Ferry Network as part of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) connecting the northernmost 41 islands with high-speed ferries.
The Integrated National Public Ferry Network is a large-scale project that introduces efficient, affordable, and convenient passenger and cargo ferry services to all administrative islands of the country. In line with the Decentralisation Act, it aims to facilitate inclusive regional development by connecting people and services, accelerating social and economic growth, improving efficiency in the delivery of public services, and improving mobility and accessibility for all citizens in all areas of the nation. The government aims to connect all Maldivian islands using the ferry network by the end of 2023.
The RTL high-speed ferry service was established in Zone 1 of the National Public Ferry Network, which consists of Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and Shaviyani Atoll. All remaining 17 atolls will be connected in phase two and phase three of the project. As such, the government has now signed a contract to build an additional 65 ferries for the last two phases. The government expects the project to greatly benefit economically and socially to the island residents.
The official inauguration of RTL services in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atolls is deemed a new chapter of transportation. RTL has a fleet of 13 modern ferries currently in service and they will serve 41 islands of zone one on a daily basis. RTL service is provided as a technology-friendly service with customers able to use its website and mobile application to purchase tickets. The ferries are modern, fast, efficient, and convenient. The air-conditioned vessels are designed to be easily accessible to people with special needs and to carry patients. The vessels also have toilets as well as luggage spaces and are built to suit both seasons, taking into account the weather of the Maldives.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which operates the Integrated National Public Ferry Network, said the aim is to connect the entire country with a maritime transport network within the next 24 months. As such, efforts are already underway to introduce the service in nine atolls within the next nine months.
