Census could be extended due to delays in data collection

Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has revealed the period for Census 2022 could be extended until September 27.

The census period was initially scheduled for September 13-15 and from September 17-25. As such, the listing operation is carried out from September 13-15, and the main data collecting operation will continue from September 17-25. However, there are delays in collecting data in some areas, according to MBS.

The Chief Statistician of MBS Aishath Hassan told PSM News that 26% of the census in Male' City and 16% of the entire country has not been completed. She said there are various difficulties in the area such as the lack of enumerators and people from households going to work during the hours enumerators attend to collect data. Therefore, she said the employees of the areas where the listing has already been completed are being sent to other areas to expedite the listing.

Furthermore, MBS has appealed to all citizens to cooperate with the census as the information collected is crucial for national development. The nationwide census is conducted every 10 years to assess the situation of the country and collect information to facilitate the planning of future projects.
