Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has concluded the survey initiated to assess the damage to Villimale' reef due to a bridge platform running aground.
The self-elevating platform, which was brought in for geotechnical studies of the Thila-Male' Bridge, was hit by strong winds and waves on August 16 while it was being anchored. EPA began surveying the damage to the reef once the platform was removed two weeks later.
Speaking to PSM News, Director General Ibrahim Naeem said EPA has now completed the survey. He said the damage caused by the platform due to running aground has now been shared with Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the contractor of the project. He added EPA would begin the process of issuing a fine after Afcons respond to the findings of the survey.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has assured that there would be no delay in the project timeline despite the incident.
