Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has revealed efforts are underway to bring environmentally friendly electric buses to the Male' city minibus service.
Initially, the government planned the service using electric minibuses to the city. However, the service was launched with engine vehicles.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Hamad Abdul Ghani said the ministry tried bringing electric buses for use and the work is still underway adding, however, the service was started with engine vehicles as it was taking time to bring the electric vehicles. He said time is consumed as the buses are being customised and designed in a specific way. He assured minibuses used for the services will be environmentally friendly in the future.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) commenced the minibus service on September 5. The bus routes have been established to make it easy for school students, office workers, and individuals travelling to hospitals to reach their destinations within 10 minutes from the farthest bus stops. The bus routes are interconnected to areas in Henveiru and Maafannu and each bus stop is a five-minute walk away from the other.
MTCC announced over 120,000 passengers used the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) minibus service in Male' in the first two weeks.
