The President’s Office has stated efforts are underway to increase the fish processing capacity of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO). The Maldives is currently experiencing the high season for fishing and fishermen have complained of the difficulties they are facing in processing their catch.
At a press conference, the Spokesperson at the President’s Office Miuvaan Mohamed said MIFCO is conducting inspections to procure a vessel to increase the fish processing capacity. He also highlighted the increase in fish purchases and said a daily average of 700 tonnes of fish were processed in the past two weeks. He added that MIFCO is currently operating at full capacity.
Additionally, Spokesperson Miuvaan assured the state-owned company will increase its capacity and solve the issues in fish processing. He also noted the recent agreement to transfer 14 ice plants of MIFCO to Fenaka Corporation Limited to solve the challenges in providing ice to fishermen.
