The Maldives has stated that it believes global issues require global solutions.
In his message on the 57th Anniversary of the Maldives gaining membership in the United Nations (UN), Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Shahid said a more resilient and stronger world can be built through multilateralism. The minister said the strength of the UN lies in its ability to shape norms, change discourse, and forge consensus. He expressed the belief that every crisis has reconfirmed that multilateral cooperation is the only path. He added a better version of the world can be shaped together by reinforcing multilateralism.
Furthermore, Minister Shahid said multilateralism is at the heart of the oreign policy of the Maldives. As one of the smallest countries in the UN, the minister said the Maldives is proud to have demonstrated leadership at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), call to resolve conflicts, address poverty and vulnerability, find joint and urgent solutions to the impacts of climate change, to empower women and girls, and to promote and strengthen the ideals of peace around the world. He said it reaffirms the longstanding commitment of the Maldives to international cooperation and to the rules-based international order, with the UN at its core.
Meanwhile, Minister Shahid said the Maldives has consistently called for and supported global initiatives to assist small island developing states (SIDS) in enhancing their resilience, as well as those to assist fledgling democracies in aligning their national human rights systems with international obligations and standards. The minister added the Maldives will be once again running for a Seat at the UN Human Right Council (UNHRC) for the term 2023-2025. He highlighted the Maldives took leadership on several initiatives, including actively collaborating with countries to set up new mechanisms and mandates that further strengthened human rights throughout the world during its previous two terms at the UNHRC. He added the Maldives was a proud member among the countries that created the first mandate holder on the wider question of human rights and the environment.
