Ministry of Transport has revealed that Makunudhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Muli in Meemu Atoll have been chosen to commence domestic seaplane operations. The transport ministry made the statement while providing details of its tasks to the Parliamentary Committee on National Heritage.
The ministry stated that efforts are underway to establish domestic seaplane operations in the atolls in accordance with the National Spatial Plan. The ministry stated it has chosen Muli and Makunudhoo as they are the most in need of the services. The ministry stated it has designated areas to build terminals and floating platforms and the government's policy is to establish the auxiliary services within a 30-minute radius.
The government has been working to connect all the inhabited islands under the National Spatial Plan by linking the islands via sea route with the Raajje Transport Link (RTL). The Maldives has the largest seaplane fleet in the world, which are mainly used for flights between Velana International Airport (VIA) and resorts.
