New powerhouse begins operations in Olhuvelifushi

Fenaka Corporation Limited has begun providing electricity services by bringing a new powerhouse to operation in Olhuvelifushi, Lhaviyani Atoll.

The new powerhouse began operations after the 28-year-old powerhouse was switched off. Residents of Olhuvelifushi had been dealing with longstanding electricity issues, while the main concern was the location of the old powerhouse. The residents have complained of the noise and the smoke emitted by the powerhouse, which was located at the harbour near the residential community.

A new powerhouse was built in Olhuvelifushi as the old powerhouse did not have enough space for more generator sets to meet the increasing demand for power. The new powerhouse was built away from the community and consists of a 400MW generator, which is a significant increase in capacity compared to the 150KW generator and 250KW generator at the old powerhouse.

Fenaka has been building new powerhouses away from communities, upgrading electricity networks, and opening offices in the atolls. There were 67 powerhouses that had become a problem for local communities when the administration took office. However, in the past few years, these powerhouses have been moved and developed away from residential areas.
