Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has revealed the marine bunkering service will begin in Haa Alifu Atoll by the end of 2022. She made the remarks at the ceremony to mark World Maritime Day.
At the ceremony, Minister Nahula said preparations are being made to establish a fuel storage system in Haa Alifu Atoll to commence the bunkering service. She noted the Maldives established itself in the maritime sector 30 years ago but not enough efforts have been made to develop the sector in the country.
As such, Minister Nahula said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has prioritised the development of the maritime sector by providing training and educational opportunities to build capable workers that would benefit the sector. She also said seamen were designated as key workers this year which would result in more cargo ship arrivals to the country and the development of the shipping industry.
Furthermore, Minister Nahula said the maritime sector should implement the latest technological innovations and use vessels that do not damage the environment.
