A telethon will be held in the Maldives to help those affected by devastating floods in Pakistan.
The telethon is scheduled to be held on October 1. The Pakistan High Commission in the Maldives, Pakistan-Maldives Friendship Association (PMFA), the state-run public service media (PSM), and other media outlets in the country have decided to jointly conduct the event. The event is held to raise funds to help those affected by the recent floods in Pakistan.
The Pakistan High Commission and PMFA met with Managing Director of PSM Ali Khalid, President of Maldives Media Council (MMC) Mohamad Shafau Hassan, and members of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) to discuss the conduct of the telethon. During the meeting, the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the Maldives Vice Admiral Ather Mukhtar (Retd) called upon all the media and the people of the Maldives to participate in the campaign to help the Muslim brothers and sisters of Pakistan.
Unusually heavy monsoon rains have caused devastating floods in both the north and south of Pakistan, affecting more than 30 million people and killing more than 1,000 people. The South Asian nation was already in an economic crisis, facing high inflation, a depreciating currency, and a current account deficit. The United Nations (UN) states that the humanitarian crisis in the country will worsen in the coming days.
Furthermore, more than 1,460 health facilities have been damaged in various parts of Pakistan. Of these, 432 centres have been damaged beyond repair. The floods have hit the southern region of Sindh the hardest.
