Gov’t says no permit given to park additional vehicles in garages

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has stated it has not given permission for individuals to register more than the permitted number of vehicles in garages.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on National Heritage, Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Shimaaz Ali said garage permits are now handled by the Male’ City Council and it would have information on the owners of the garages registered in the past year. He said no permit has been issued to individuals to register more than the maximum allowed number of vehicles in garages. He added the permits are issued based on 100sqft per vehicle and the relevant regulations have been improved in order to solve the parking issues in Male’ City.

Over 80,000 vehicles have been registered in the Greater Male’ Region, of which 4,500 are cars. Residents have expressed concern over the traffic congestion and the large number of vehicles parked on the streets. Previously, many vehicles were registered under the same garages but the transport ministry made changes to the regulations which cap the number of vehicles that can be parked in one garage.
