MATI states Census 2022 will reveal tourism’s impact on GDP

Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has stated Census 2022 will reveal the impact the tourism industry has on the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first time. Executive Board Member of MATI Iyaz Waheed made the statement in a video posted on Twitter, as enumerators continue to visit households and businesses to collect information for the nationwide census. He also encouraged all workers and stakeholders of the tourism industry to give their full support to the census.

Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) will be collecting data for Census 2022 until September 25. The population census is a count of all individuals and household units across the country and is conducted every 10 years to assess the situation of the country and collect information to facilitate the planning of future projects. During the census, data will be collected on the income and living conditions of the public. The last census in the Maldives was conducted in 2014. Census 2022 is the largest survey conducted in the country.

The full report of the census will be published on National Statistics Day, which falls on October 20. Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that Census 2022 is crucial for national development and appealed to all citizens to participate in the programme as part of their national duty.
