Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has announced the National Public Ferry Network launched as part of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) will begin in Huvadhoo Atoll by September next year. He made the remarks at the ceremony to inaugurate the land reclamation project in Dhaandhoo and the launching of the new cutter suction dredger of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
During the ceremony, Minister Aslam stated the aim of the government is to connect the entire country with a transport system, adding that many individuals are still using the ferry service across the Maldives. He said more than half a million people as of last month have travelled to the islands of Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu Atoll. He also said the vision of the government is to develop and provide services to the residents of other islands. He noted the country’s development has accelerated in the past 15 years, mainly due to the freedom of speech and the introduction of competitive political movements in the country.
The National Public Ferry Network is a large-scale project that introduces efficient, affordable, and convenient passenger and cargo ferry services to all administrative islands of the country. In line with the Decentralisation Act, it aims to facilitate inclusive regional development by connecting people and services, accelerating social and economic growth, improving efficiency in the delivery of public services, and improving mobility and accessibility for all citizens in all areas of the nation. The government aims to connect all Maldivian islands using the ferry network by the end of 2023.
