Local councils receive equipment to build 14 children’s parks

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has handed over the equipment needed to build children’s parks on 14 islands. The equipment were officially handed over to the local councils at a special ceremony at the National Football Stadium in Male' City.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof said the government is working to build 130 children’s parks in the atolls. He highlighted the parks will be built as soon as possible despite the delays on some islands.

The equipment were handed over to build children’s parks in Neykurendhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Kanditheemu and Maaungoodhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Narudhoo and Magoodhoo in Noonu Atoll, and Kamadhoo and Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll. The children’s parks will also be built in Bodufulhadhoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, Rinbudhoo and Meedhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, Thimarafushi, Gaadhiffushi and Guraidhoo in Thaa atoll, and Mundoo in Laamu Atoll.

The youth ministry stated the equipment will be transferred to the islands upon the request of the local councils. The ministry stated the equipment will be given out equitably to the islands without taking into account their residential population and the construction will not involve cutting down trees. The ministry has been working to develop children’s parks and outdoor gyms to establish healthy communities in the atolls.
