The Fuvahmulah City Council has revealed a contractor will soon be hired for the housing development project.
Speaking to PSM News, the Mayor of Fuvahmulah Ismail Rafeeq emphasised the need for housing and said over 800 residents applied for 34 housing units in the recent application opening. He noted that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pledged to develop over 400 housing units and that the project is currently in the planning stage. He added it will be opened for bidding and a contractor will be hired as soon as possible.
Additionally, Mayor Rafeeq said many residents of Fuvahmulah have to live in small households but there is currently no plan to provide land plots for residential development as the most in need of housing do not have the financial means. As such, he said the most important initiative is to develop housing units.
Fuvahmulah City has a population of over 14,000 residents, with 12,700 registered residents. The city has 491 hectares of land but faced housing issues due to the large undeveloped areas. The Fuvahmulah City Council is also opening housing project to the private sector and are in discussions with businesses.
