Dhaandhoo land reclamation to be completed by mid-October

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated the land reclamation project of Dhaandhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, will be completed by mid-October.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adam Azim said that the 25 hectares of land will be reclaimed by mid-October including a land area for the new powerhouse. Currently, 10 hectares of land have been reclaimed in Dhaandhoo by the largest dredger owned by MTCC. The company is also making efforts to protect the beach in dry areas in addition to the reclamation project on the island.

President of Dhaandhoo Island Council Mohammed Asif said many residents have to live in the same house due to space constraints on the island. He said there is a huge demand for housing development, adding there were 54 applicants for the 11 land plots opened by the council. He said the housing issues will be solved by expanding the land area.

The Land Reclamation and Shore Protection Project of Dhaandhoo was contracted to MTCC by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in November 2020. The scope of the project consists of dredging and reclamation operations of 25 hectares, construction of a 1,238m rock boulder revetment, and 240m groynes. MTCC is tasked with completing the project at a cost of USD12 million.
