Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed the harbour development project in Dhaandhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, will be completed and in use by January next year. Upon completion of the project, Dhaandhoo will have the largest harbour in the Maldives.
Following multiple complaints regarding the inconvenience of using the existing harbour, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC in January 2022 to expand and develop the harbour in Dhaandhoo.
Speaking to the media following the inspection of the project in Dhaandhoo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said the existing harbour will be further dredged and connected to the newly developed harbour which will be constructed with a T-jetty.
The scope of the work involves 81,000cbm of harbour dredging operations, 4,953cbm of channel dredging operations, construction of a 30m groyne, a 333m breakwater, a 170m revetment, a 529m quay wall, and installation of 1,203sqm of harbour pavement. The project also includes constructing a 100m long and 3m wide concrete jetty, installation of 36 harbour lights, mooring rings, and mooring buoys, as well as the construction of a 10m ramp.
MTCC is contracted to complete the harbour development project within one year and four months at a cost of USD4.5 million.
