President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the broadcasting sector has benefited the most from technological development. He made the remarks at the first annual Maldives Broadcast Award 2022 organised by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).
Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih said that broadcasting is deeply connected to communication and sharing of information. He highlighted that one of the most powerful weapons the British had used in World War II was radio, which shows how crucial broadcasting is. He said that the later wars also showed the importance of broadcasting, by televising the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. He added that Saddam Hussain had used radio and television to address his army.
Therefore, President Solih said the broadcasting sector had seen the biggest improvements due to technological breakthroughs with the introduction of radio, television, the internet, websites, and blogs. He also noted the later innovations such as podcasting, which allows anyone to be involved in breaking and spreading the latest news and information.
Furthermore, President Solih said while the Maldives has introduced broadcasting some time ago, the country opened up to the rest of the world and established and strengthened diplomatic relations recently. He also highlighted the importance of independent journalism which allows every Maldivian to convey their opinion on equal terms. He expressed gratitude towards the individuals who had contributed to the development of broadcasting in the Maldives.
