Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that asphalt laying will commence in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll, in the last week of September.
The Hoarafushi Road Development Project commenced in April last year. It is the first road construction project initiated on the island. Hoarafushi is one of the largest islands in the Maldives and has a population of over 2,000 people.
Under the road development project, major works have been completed to prepare for asphalt laying. As such, cable and utility junctions, casting works and drainage works have also been carried out. The initial plan was to commence asphalt laying in July. However, the work was postponed due to bad weather. MTCC said necessary equipment for asphalt laying has now been delivered to the island.
Under the project, 11 roads of Hoarafushi will be redeveloped, including the six largest roads on the island. A total of 5.3km of roads will be developed with asphalt paving, speed breakers, street lights, signage, and a stormwater drainage system. The total value of the project is USD4.66 million.
