The Local Government Authority (LGA) has begun the 4th Fanoalla Dharubaaru in Gan, Laamu Atoll. The forum is being held in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to discuss and improve the decentralised system of governance.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Decentralisation Ali Niyaz said that the most immediate change being proposed to the decentralised system is the process of holding by-elections for the women’s development committees (WDCs).
Speakers at the forum also included Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LGA Afshan Latheef, Director General of LGA Shammoon Adam, and USAID Programme Coordinator to the Maldives Hillery Midkiff. Those who are participating in the forum include presidents of local councils and WDCs, parliamentarians, and officials from state institutions and companies.
The purpose of the Fanoalla Dharubaaru is to discuss the government’s five-year strategic action plan, policies, the challenges faced in implementing the eighth amendment to the Decentralisation Act, and to propose solutions for the upcoming Viavathi Raajje conference.
