HPA warns of rise in mosquito-borne diseases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has warned of an increase in mosquito-borne diseases.

HPA urged the public to take precautionary measures as the number of reported illnesses are currently higher than in the same period last year. It stated that there is more risk of illness during the rainy season, as it results in more mosquito breeding sites.

Statistics published by HPA show that there were 322 cases of dengue fever in July and 268 cases in August. Several doctors have also expressed concern over the number of dengue patients. As such, they have urged patients to be more alert and receive urgent medical attention if showing symptoms.

Furthermore, HPA stated that 10 of the 54 individuals tested in July were positive for influenza while 47 out of 111 individuals tested positive in August. A total of 77 cases of influenza have been reported so far in 2022.

HPA has advised the public to practice safety measures to protect themselves from mosquitoes that can cause diseases such as dengue and Chikungunya and to eliminate areas where water gets collected, as stagnant water creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
