MTCC commences Hoarafushi Airport Jetty Construction

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun the Airport Jetty Construction Project in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll.

The scope of the project includes channel dredging operations of 18,000cbm, construction of jetty using precast L blocks, construction of a geobag revetment, and installation of navigational lights. The value of the project is USD389,000.

Hoarafushi Airport is the northernmost airport in the Maldives and is the first certified regional airport under the Regional Airport Company Limited (RACL). The airport was inaugurated in November 2020 by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The development of Hoarafushi Airport was contracted to MTCC in early 2019. A total of 34 hectares of land was reclaimed for the development of the airport and a causeway was built to connect the airport to the island. The construction of an airport jetty began following public concerns over difficulties in reaching Hoarafushi Airport from nearby islands and resorts. Currently, individuals have to travel to the airport by taxi after arriving at the main harbour in Hoarafushi.

Two airlines currently operate flights to Hoarafushi Airport. As such, national airline Maldivian operates four weekly scheduled flights and Manta Air has launched charter flights in collaboration with JA Manafaru Maldives.
