Spain-based contractor to develop hospitals in two islands

Ministry of Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Spain-based company HOMT España to develop a tertiary hospital in Gan, Laamu Atoll, and a new hospital in Gadhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The health ministry stated that the projects will ensure the provision of critical health services in the atolls.

The government has formulated plans to develop hospitals in 12 islands including Gadhdhoo. The other islands are Ihavandho and Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll, Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Velidhoo and Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Hinnavaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll, Vilifushi in Thaa Atoll, and Maamigili in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. The health ministry stated that the design and cost estimate of all the hospital development projects have been completed.

Furthermore, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to develop tertiary hospitals in five different regions in the Maldives. As such, the government has decided to upgrade Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital, and Gan Regional Hospital to tertiary hospitals. The fieldwork has begun for some of the projects, with Gan Regional Hospital being built with a 100-bed cancer treatment centre.
