Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has said that the government has brought an end to the torture and humiliation of prisoners in the Maldives. He made the statement while speaking at the ceremony held to mark the 51st anniversary of the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS).
At the ceremony, Home Minister Imran said that reforming the prison system in the country is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and the government has done more in this regard than any other government in the past 50 years. He said the government has now brought an end to the torture and humiliation of prisoners and that torturing inmates is a thing of the past.
Furthermore, Minister Imran said the most important thing the government is doing to change the condition of prisons is rehabilitation. As such, he said a special priority is given to rehabilitation programmes. He said a rehabilitation command was established to reform the dire rehabilitation system of the country.
Additionally, Minister Imran said that handling dangerous inmates is frightening, difficult, and challenging, highlighting prison officers are very patient, capable, and sincere. He thanked the officers and their families for the great national service, urging everyone to be more patient in building a better society.
