Land plot allocated from Hulhumale' for ECM

The Government of Maldives has allocated a land plot from Hulhumale' to the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).

The President’s Office ordered ECM to vacate the old Jamaluddin School building to construct a new building for Arabiyya School in the land plot. ECM used the Old Jamaluddin School building to store files and other items related to previous elections and also housed elections-related sections. The files and documents of ECM have now been temporarily moved to the MTCC Sawmill Relocation Building, which previously accommodated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

One major challenge for the ECM in preparing for the upcoming presidential election is also space constraints. In an effort to solve the issue, ECM held discussions with the government following which a land plot has now been allocated, according to the President of ECM Fuwad Thoufeeq. He said the plot is important for the future to develop an office building for ECM.

ECM is currently working on registry-related formalities of the newly allocated 15,000 acre land plot. ECM plans to construct a temporary structure at the plot to be used for the work of the upcoming presidential election.

Various political parties have begun preparations for the upcoming presidential election. As such, some parties have announced candidates while other parties plan to choose candidates through an internal election or during the party congress.
