Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun asphalt laying on the internal roads of Fuvahmulah City. The asphalt laying project was inaugurated by Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq.
Fuvahmulah, an island of 500 hectares, has a population of over 12,000 people. In 2016, the island was paved and developed to stop the flooding of the roads. The project was reinitiated after it was abandoned by the previous administration after the Maldives Road Development Corporation Limited (MRDC) was abolished. The current administration contracted the project to MTCC, along with the redevelopment of the roads linking with the ring road of the city.
The scope of the project includes sub-base preparation of 122,659sqm, an asphalt wearing course of 95, 239 sqm, footpath preparation of 27,450sqm, road marking, streetlights, and stormwater drainage works of an area of 19,940m.
The road development project in Fuvahmulah aims to resolve the long-standing issues of flooding and potholes in the roads of the city. The roads being developed under the project are the main internal roads used by residents of Fuvahmulah. The cost of the project is USD21.4 million.
