MTCC begins Komandoo Shore Protection Rectification Project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun rectification of existing revetment in Komandoo harbour.

Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll, has a population of 1,900 residents, but currently, only 700 residents live on the island, due to the lack of housing and socio-economic development. A project to reclaim 10 hectares of land was conducted in Komandoo in 2018, but the reclaimed land is currently unfit for housing development.

At a gathering held with the residents of the island in January this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the project to connect Komandoo and Mathikomandoo. MTCC launched the project a week later.

MTCC signed the agreement to conduct the Komandoo Shore Protection Rectification Project and Mathikomandoo Connectivity Project in January this year. MTCC will link Komandoo and Mathikomandoo with a 200m long bridge as part of the project. The project also involves the reclamation of 16.7 hectares of land in Mathikomandoo, constructing a 1,520m rock boulder revetment, 353m groynes, and a 112m geobag revetment in the reclaimed area.

As part of the project, MTCC will also protect the previously reclaimed area in Komandoo. MTCC has now started removing the large stone canal constructed to protect the previously reclaimed area and started rectification of revetments. As such, the rectification of 1,690m of shore protection installed in Komandoo is being done.

The Mathikomandoo Connectivity Project aims to alleviate the land shortage issue in Komandoo, which has halted housing development and socio-economic opportunities, resulting in many residents leaving the island.
